PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium used for digital recording, balancing input-output characteristics and overwriting characteristics so as to ensure interchangeability with a metal evaporated(ME) tape in a system and having running durability and no corrosiveness of the ferrite. SOLUTION: A magnetic layer consisting essentially of ferromagnetic powder and a resin binder is formed on at least one face of a nonmagnetic substrate to obtain the objective magnetic recording medium. The magnetic layer has 0.05-0.3μm thickness, 2,000-2,400Oe coercive force Hc and 0.03-0.13G*cm saturation magnetization and the ratio of the surface Cl content to the surface Fe content is <=0.3.
