PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a sustained release composition capable of releasing useful bacteria or a useful substance with a requested release pattern. SOLUTION: The sustained release composition comprises a gel bead containing the useful bacteria or the useful substance and a sustained release regulator, and is characterized in that a sustained release regulator contains at least alginic acid or an alginic acid derivative and the sustained releasability of the sustained release composition is controlled by regulating the kind and the content of an ingredient composing the sustained release regulator.
