PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a traverse speed by easily keeping the rotating balance of a traverse drum. SOLUTION: This traverse mechanism is provided with the traverse drum 3 having a spiral peripheral groove 2 guiding a thread-like member 4 on the peripheral face and rotated to traverse the thread-like member 4 in the axial direction and a control member 5 arranged near the traverse drum 3 to prevent the release of the thread-like member 4 from the groove 2. The spiral groove 2 is formed with a peripheral right winding half-circle groove 2a and a left winding half-circle groove 2b.
