PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing 4-hydroxy-6-methyl-3-(4-methyl-2- pentenoyl)-2-pyrone as the intermediate for producing 4-hydroxy-6-methyl-3-(4- methyl-2-pentanoyl)-2-pyrone. SOLUTION: This method for producing 4-hydroxy-6-methyl-3-(4-methyl-2- pentenoyl)-2-pyrone comprises making at least one inorganic compound selected from alkali metal hydroxides, alkaline earth metal hydroxides, alkali metal carbonates, alkaline earth metal carbonates and alkali metal fluorides act on 2,3-dihydr-7-methyl-2-(1-methylethyl)-4H,5H-pyrano[4,3-b]pyrane-4,5-dione in water, an alcohol or a mixture thereof.
