CRUDE DRUG EXTRACT OF SCILLA SCILLOIDES HAVING ANTICANCER ACTIVITY

PURPOSE: A crude drug extract of Scilla scilloides and their use as anticancer active substance caused by cytotoxicity generated by inhibition of various enzyme actions, formation inhibition of a cell membrane, DNA replication, DNA transcription or protein synthesis inhibition, etc. are provided. Because the extract is free from toxicity and side effects and exhibits strong activity against a cancer cell, it is useful as an anticancer agent. CONSTITUTION: The crude drug exact is prepared by the following process consisting of: extracting Scilla scilloides in methanol with refluxing; suspending the extract in an excess amount of water and extracting with shaking to give a butanol solubilizing part; dissolving the butanol solubilizing part in methanol and subjecting to chromatography to obtain an active fraction; and freeze drying the active fraction. The chromatography is sephadex LH-20 gel column chromatography or YMC gel column chromatography.
