PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing an optical fiber base material capable of increasing speed of deposition in forming a deposited body of glass microparticles around the outer periphery of a glass rod using OVD process. SOLUTION: This method for manufacturing an optical fiber base material comprises a glass rod having at least a core as a starting material, forming a deposited body of glass microparticles by blowing the glass microparticles synthesized in a flame of a burner for synthesizing glass reciprocating in the axial direction relatively with the starting material around the outer periphery of the starting material while rotating the starting material, where the ratio of the bulk density of the deposited body of the glass microparticles depositing when the diameter of the base material is small to the bulk density of the deposited body of the glass microparticles depositing when the diameter of the base material is large is made <1.
