PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating applicator for forming a coating film, in which the generation of longitudinal stripe due to the wear of lip at a worn part at the time of changing the coating width, the ununiformity of coating film thickness, and dot defect or the like due to the chipping dreg or worn powder are suppressed and a smooth surface having uniform film thickness is attained. SOLUTION: In the applicator, which is provided with guide rolls for guiding a supporting body in the upstream side and the downstream side of an extrusion type coater head having a slit part formed between the upstream side lip and the downstream side lip to enable to extrude a coating liquid and is for applying a coating liquid directly on a supporting body traveling between the upstream side guide roll and the downstream side guide roll, a lip protective member thinner than the film thickness of the coating film is arranged between the uncoated part of the supporting body and the coater head. Further, the applicator is provided with a winding on and out device for the lip protective member.
