PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for detecting chuck failure for machine tools, which can detect a chuck error easily and surely. SOLUTION: The periphery of a tool holder 2 is measured by a sensor 12 with the change of the distance d between the outer peripheral face of the flange section 2B of the tool holder 2 secured to a main spindle 3 and the periphery of the tool holder 2 made correspond to the rotation angle of the tool holder 2. FFT analyzing is made to the measured data by a CPU18 to extract fundamental wave frequency components to calculate the amplitude. The eccentricity quantity of the tool holder 2 can be calculated from the amplitude of the fundamental wave frequency components. The detection of the fact that the eccentricity quantity exceeds the preset permissible value judges that the tool holder 2 is chucked wrongly.
