PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for simply and highly selectively obtaining a compound having carboxy group and/or carbonyl group in reaction for oxidizing a polyhydric alcohol using an oxygen-containing gas. SOLUTION: This method for producing the compound having the carboxy group and/or carbonyl group comprises oxidizing the polyhydric alcohol using the oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst containing one or more kinds of metals selected from groups 7A, 8 and 1B of the periodic table and a salt or an acid containing a halogen atom or a salt or an acid containing sulfur atom (except salts or acids consisting of only one or more kinds selected from H2SO4 and salts thereof).
