PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for dehydration of lumber by compression wherein free water of the lumber can be uniformly reduced in a short time without generating dry crack, bursting and the like in the lumber. SOLUTION: When water in the lumber is squeezed out from the lumber by compressing on outer surface of the lumber with liquid by arranging the lumber W in liquid L, the lumber is covered by an elastic component 11 to form water-collecting space 12 between the elastic component and the lumber, the lumber is compressed with the liquid, and the water discharged from the lumber is collected in the water-collecting space.
