An electro-mechanical system for shifting gears (316, 320) on a bicycle (20) calculates gear ratios based on rider cadence and bicycle speed and then sorts the gear ratios in order from lowes t to highest. During automatic operation, the system determines if a calculated cadence is within limits set by the rider, and changes the gear ratio as necessary in order to keep the calculated cadence within predetermined limits.
