PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing an intermediate for 19-nor-vitamin D. SOLUTION: A method of producing a phosphine oxide represented by formula (1) [X1 and X2 may be each identical or different and is H or hydroxy protecting group] and comprises the steps wherein the 4-hydroxyl group is removed from quinic acid represented by the formula (2) [X1 and X2 are each a hydroxyl- protecting group]; the resultant dehydroxylated compound is converted to a ketone represented by formula (3) [X1 and X2 are each defined in formula (2)]; the resultant ketone is allowed to condense with each other to form an ester represented by formula (4) [X1 and X2 are each defined in formula (2)]; the resultant ester is reduced to produce an alcohol represented by formula (5) [X1 and X2 are each defined in formula (2)] and the resultant alcohol is converted to the objective phosphine oxide.
