PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for achieving absolute gradation display in a voltage-driven simple matrix. SOLUTION: In a matrix display device, an electro-optical material used for display responds to an effective voltage, and in the display, when display is performed by applying, to a row electrode, a signal satisfying normal orthogonal functions containing information presenting selection/non-selection of the row, and also applying, to a column electrode, a signal containing gradation information included in the column, at least a part of the gradation information is given by phase modulation of the signal to be applied to the column electrode.
