PURPOSE: A device and a method for cooling air in a machining device are provided to prevent workpiece defects and to increase lifetime of a tool by installing an air cooling system to such a machine that does not use cooling water so as to reduce temperature of a major shaft. CONSTITUTION: An air cooling device comprises an air supply pipe(70), a solenoid valve(60), an operating unit(30), an NC(numeric control) controller(40), and a relay(50). The air supply pipe is installed through a through hole formed to the middle position of a spindle. The solenoid valve is installed to the middle of the air supply pipe to guide or block air flow. The operating unit switches supply of air as a cooling agent. The NC controller controls air supply through receiving switching signal of air supply from the operating unit and detecting rotation from the spindle. The relay receives driving signal of solenoid from the controller to control an operating of the solenoid valve.
