PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alkali metal electrochemical cell which has an excellent charge/discharge capacity and a long cycle life and minimizes a first cycle irreversible capacity. SOLUTION: The electrochemical cell comprises a) a negative electrode intercalating with an alkali metal, b) a positive electrode containing an electrode active material intercalating with the alkali metal, c) a non-aqueous electrolyte which activates the negative electrode and the positive electrode and d) a phosphate compound added to the electrolyte. The phosphate additive is represented by the general formula, (R1O)P(=O)(OR2)(OR3). In the general formula, R1, R2 and R3 are the same or different from one another, at least one (but not all the 3 groups) of the R groups is a hydrogen atom, or at least one of the R groups has at least 3 carbon atoms and further contains an sp or sp2 hybrid orbital carbon atom bonded to an sp3 hybrid orbital carbon atom bonded to the oxygen atom bonded to the phosphorus atom. |
