PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-sized and inexpensive image reader which properly and satisfactorily read an image. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with a light-emitting part 2 which makes a transmissible document F irradiated, an optical system 3 which forms the image of a luminous flux transmitted through the transmissible document F, and a light detection part 4 which detects the light formed as the image. The image reader has an optical axis 11 in the longitudinal direction from the reader front part, and the light-emitting part 2, the optical system 3, and the light detection part 4 are arranged in a column along the optical axis 11. A document insertion hole 1a and a document ejection outlet 1b, set in a position different from that of the document inlet 1a are provided in the front part. A carrying mechanism is provided which carries and guides the transmissible document F inserted from the document inlet 1a so that it can pass the optical axis 11 and be turned back to the document ejection hole 1b.
