PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which is excellent in both of durability and surface smoothness. SOLUTION: The filler material for the magnetic recording medium is composite nonmagnetic particle powder which is formed by immobilizing one or >=2 kinds of oxide particulate powder of 0.001 to 0.07μm in average particle size selected from aluminum oxide, zirconium oxide, cerium oxide, titanium oxide, silicon oxide and molybdenum oxide to the particle surface of hematite particle powder by a silicon compound formed from tetraalkoxysilane and the content of the oxide particulate powder is 0.1 to 20 wt.% of the weight of the management particle powder. This magnetic recording medium is constituted by forming a magnetic recording layer containing a binder resin, magnetic particle powder and the filler material described above on a nonmagnetic substrate.
