PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time required for restart of image read operation by reading out image information stored in a photoelectric conversion sensor as it is, in the case of a short time interruption. SOLUTION: When image read is to be restarted after temporary interrupt of image read operation in an image reader, image data read immediately prior to the interruption is used as it is to restart image read in the case of a short time interruption, but image data read prior to the interruption is deleted and image data in the position, where a document or a photoelectric conversion means has stopped is read again in the case of a long time interruption. Thus restart operation of image read after interruption is performed optimally.
