PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital broadcasting receiver by which the display area size and the display location of character information are varied and the caption corresponding to a TV broadcasting program is easily displayed even when the program is displayed by compression, and to provide a method for controlling the receiver. SOLUTION: The value of control information is automatically changed based on the display position of a video screen in the TV broadcasting program in the digital broadcasting receiver by which a TV broadcasting, a data broadcasting and a character broadcasting are received and character information by the character broadcasting is displayed by multiplexing based on control information which is received with the character information on the screen where the TV broadcasting program and data broadcasting contents are displayed by multiscreen.
