PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a zoom lens including a wide-angle area and consisting of three lens groups having a desired variable power ratio and high optical performance, and optical equipment using the zoom lens. SOLUTION: This zoom lens is provided with a 1st group L1 having negative refractive power, a 2nd group L2 having positive refractive power, and a 3rd group L3 having positive refractive power in order from an object side, and performs zooming by moving the lens groups so that space between the 1st and the 2nd groups L1 and L2 may be small and space between the 2nd and the 3rd groups L2 and L3 may be large at a telephoto end with respect to a wide-angle end. In the zoom lens, the 2nd group L2 is constituted of a 2a-th group L2a having positive refractive power and a 2b-th group L2b having positive refractive power with the largest air distance in the 2nd group L2 as a boundary, and performs focusing by moving the 2b-th group L2b, and satisfies a condition 0.2<d2abW/fw<1.0 when space between the 2a-th group L2a and the 2b-th group L2b at the time of bringing an infinity object into focus at the wide-angle end is defined as d2abW and the focal distance of an entire system at the wide-angle end is defined as (fw).
