PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an oscillator that can control its oscillating frequency or duty ratio in spite of a small circuit scale. SOLUTION: The oscillator that generates a clock signal of a prescribed frequency has oscillation circuits (100, 200, 300, 400) where gates including at least one inverting gate (I) are connected in cascade in a ring and an exclusive OR gate (X) having an oscillation control input is properly inserted to the ring. Then applying the oscillation control input to the exclusive OR gate at a desired position in desired timing converts the exclusive OR gate into an inverting gate or a noninverting gate to produce a propagation signal wave in the oscillation circuits. The oscillated frequency is controlled by the number of generated propagation signal waves and the duty ratio is controlled by the position of the converted exclusive OR gate.
