VOLTAGE CONTROLLED VARIABLE OPTICAL ATTENUATOR

PURPOSE: A voltage controlled variable optical attenuator is provided to obtain the large variation of attenuation rate even if minute axial misalignment by using a coupling loss. CONSTITUTION: A fixing ferule(102) includes an optical fiber(101). A moving ferule(105) includes another optical fiber(109). The moving ferule(105) moves in a longitudinal direction to generate a shaft distortion between the two optical fibers(101,109) in the ferules(102,105). The shaft distortion generates an attenuation. A minute misalignment sensing unit(106,107) measures a minute misalignment inducing a variation of attenuation rate.
