PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reproducing device that reproduces data recorded on a recording medium at different compression rates and facilitates movement of the data to an object reproducing position so as to enhance the operation feeling. SOLUTION: A read head 12 reads UTOC(User Table Of Contents) information recorded on an MD(Mini Disk) 2, a CPU of a system controller 17 detects a recording mode from the UTOC information and sets a carrying amount of the read head 12 to a servo controller 14a in the case of search with a skip of an information read position (fast forward search skipping forwards the information read position or rewind search skipping the position backwards) depending on the detected recording mode. When searching an information read position, the servo controller 14a applies drive control to the read head 12 by a carrying amount of the head 12 depending on the recording mode to control the carrying of the head 12 only by the skip amount corresponding to the same reproduction time as that required by any recording mode.
