PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical recording medium player for discriminating the type of the optical recording medium in the sequence to turn on the focus servo control and also playing back the optical recording medium. SOLUTION: The player is provided with: a measuring means for measuring a 1st detected amplitude signal corresponding to a 1st optical means and a 2nd detected amplitude signal corresponding to a 2nd optical means, which are output signals from an optical head obtained respectively by the 1st and 2nd optical means during the focus servo; a discrimination means for discriminating the type of the optical recording medium from the comparison between the 1st detected amplitude signal measured with the measuring means and the 2nd detected amplitude signal; and a changing means for changing the performance of a frequency characteristic changing means in a signal processing means in accordance with the discrimination result made by the discrimination means.
