The invention concerns a terminal for displaying, retrieving, inputting and processing data for the user comprising a central unit (1), a storage unit (2, 46) connected to the processor (45) of said central unit, a storage unit (3, 4) for applications to be implemented by the terminal, means (14, 15, 16, 17) for communicating with at least a connection network (R) with at least an access/service provider, at least a connection interface (10, 11, 18) with at least a peripheral (12, 19a), a display screen (8) and a keyboard (9) and electrical powering means. The invention is characterised in that it further comprises a storage unit (3) with confidential access for personal data of at least a user, means for identifying (7) at least an authorised user and encryption/decryption means (36b), said identification means being insertible in reading means (6) and comprising a processor (23), means (24) for storing identification data of said at least one user, means (36a) for generating for each user a data encrypting/decrypting key, means (42) for configuring the terminal in accordance with each user's needs in terms of applications available on the network and the encrypting/decrypting means (36b) co-operating with said key for encrypting and decrypting data exchanged between the network (R) and said user and/or data contained in the storage unit with confidential access.
