A device and method for inputting handwriting data such as on a signature without using an electronic tablet. At step S2-1, a user moves a pen device (30) in the air to make a signature. At step S2-2, a camera means (20) images the pen device (30), and outputs the image data. At step S2-3, a coordinate calculating means (22) calculates the coordinates on the screen of the pen tip of the pen device (30) on the basis of the image data (moving picture data) and generates signature data. At step S2-4, a comparing/collating means (40) compares/collates the signature data with reference data. If the both of the data are similar, the user is identified , and the result of the authentication is outputted. Thus authentication is carried out on the basis of the data on the signature written in the air by the user.
