Process for protecting a surface comprises applying a wear resistant coating to the surface by spraying a powder at high speed and using an oxygen fuel. The powder contains (in wt.%) 13-43 nickel-chromium alloy, 25-64 chromium carbide, and 15-50 molybdenum. An Independent claim is also included for the wear resistant coating used in the process. Preferred Features: The powder especially contains (in wt.%) 28 nickel-chromium alloy, 42 chromium carbide, and 30 molybdenum.
