The spinning assembly has a station to break down the sliver into separate fibers, to be laid as a thin web on a gathering surface, where it is collected to one side in a condensed strand at a tapering suction opening to be passed through a twisting jet to give the spun yarn. The gathering surface (6) is the outer side of a continuous mesh belt (5). The fiber gathering surface, for spinning, is a flat path section of the belt, which travels over the suction opening (24) of a suction housing (28). The housing outer contour (29) matches the path of the belt. The belt slides over the suction housing, at the fiber gathering surface. The belt is moved by friction through a clamping roller (10) at the outer side, or a drive roller where the belt passes around it at the clamping point (8) or around a deflection drive roller at the sliver loosening roller (19). The level (30) of the belt away from the suction opening is diverted away from the suction housing to keep a gap (31) between them. A belt cleaner can be at the gap. At the clamping point, a roller presses the sliver (9) against the suction housing. The suction opening extends as far as the clamping point. The clamping roller can also lie at the drive roller. A side edge of the suction opening is parallel to the direction of belt movement. The side edges of the suction opening lie against the belt over their whole length. The suction housing can be divided into a number of chambers, along the length of the fiber gathering surface, each with a different pressure level.
