PURPOSE: Provided is a process for producing a norbornene resin excellent in optical properties and heat-resistance, the norbornene resin is useful as various forming materials. CONSTITUTION: The norbornene resin is produced by polymerizing at least one compound selected from the group consisting of norbornene and derivatives thereof in an alcohol or diol solvent in the presence of a palladium catalyst represented by the formula 1(PdX2), formula 2((R1PdX)2), or formula 3(R2nPdX2) at a temperature of 20-100deg.C for 1-24 hours. In the formula, X is halogen atom or C1-C10 alkyl, R1 is a C3-C12 allyl compound, R2 is a nitrile compound or a cyclodiene compound, and n is 1 or 2.
