The invention relates to a method of making a press felt, a press felt and a base fabric. The base fabric (2) comprises a surface component (4) on the surface facing the paper web to be dried and a base component (5) below the surface component. The transverse jointing edges of the base component (5) are provided with seam loops (9), by means of which the base component can be connected into a closed loop. At the first jointing edge of the base fabric the surface component (4) extends for a predetermined distance longer than the base component (5) and forms a seam flap (13) that protects the seam area (14) of the base component. At the second jointing edge the base component (5) extends for the length of the seam flap (13) longer than the surface component (4).
