VARIABLE OPTICAL ATTENUATOR OF IN-LINE TYPE AND FABRICATION METHOD THEREOF

Disclosed is an in-line type variable fiber-optic attenuator including an optical fiber formed on a substrate while having a desired curvature radius, an optical attenuating section including a overlay thin film exhibiting a variation in refractive index in response to a voltage applied thereto, and an electrode layer for applying section the voltage to the overlay thin film, a voltage applying section for applying the voltage to the optical attenuating section. The attenuator can obtain characteristics of low drive voltage, low power loss, and low insertion loss, while achieving high speed transmission using a simple configuration. It is also possible to achieve high speed transmission, while implementing a stable fiber-optic attenuator in a WDM transmission system.
