A braking device, especially for commercial vehicles, has a separate circuit installation (2,5) and an electric/electronic control system (16) which activates the separate system so that brakes are applied to wheels not normally braked. A braking device for a motor vehicle, especially a commercial vehicle, with a pressure-operated brake unit acting on some of the vehicle wheels and having an electric/electronic brake control system (16) to operate the unit, comprises a separate circuit installation (2,5) which is activated by operation of the brakes (9) so that at least some of the wheels not braked by the braking system are now braked through the unit (6-8).
