The invention provides a substrate for determination of the activity of a sugar hydrolase, which makes it possible to determine the quantities of products in the state of an acid or neutral solution; and a method for determination of the activity of a sugar hydrolase by using the substrate, by which the determination can be carried out continuously. Specifically, the invention relates to a substrate for determination of the enzyme activity of a sugar hydrolase, consisting of a compound of the general formula [1], a reagent for determination of the enzyme activity of a sugar hydrolase, containing the compound as the substrate, and a method for determination of the enzyme activity of a sugar hydrolase, characterized by using the compound as the substrate: [1] wherein X is a sugar residue; and R is hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, halogeno, haloalkyl, acyl, acylamino, amino, amido, formyl, or phenyl.
