The invention relates to a method for triggering means of restraint in a motor vehicle when an impact or a collision with an object occurs. According to the invention, said means of restraint such as airbags or belt tensioners are triggered in a manner which is more adapted to the actual impact situation and the unnecessary triggering of means of restraint can be avoided. According to the inventive method, acceleration is captured in time in the form of at least one acceleration signal ax. Speed DELTA Vx is captured in time on the basis of said acceleration signal ax. A threshold value DELTA xth of the speed DELTA Vx is determined as a triggering criterion. A pre-crash sensor system is used to determine the impact speed Vclose and the time of impact tO before the impact occurs. The impact situation is classified on the basis of the impact speed Vclose . Classification of the impact situation enables a time window [tA...tB] for triggering to be determined, wherein the time progression of the speed DELTA Vx is generated.
