The railway system for high speed passenger and freight rail traffic, with passive direction change points, has selected rolling stock in the train with its own drive and brake systems and an additional broad gauge wheel set (1). On changing the wheels while in motion, the freight car/carriage engages a additional rail (3) to be diverted from the train into a side track and halted for loading/unloading. The detached rolling stock is accelerated to rejoin a train on the normal track (4) with the wheels changed to the standard set (2) for the rail gauge. The wheel sets are raised and lowered as required.
