PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform stable seek operation by preventing the prolonging of seek time. SOLUTION: A target position is set in an ST1 and a present position is discriminated in an ST2. The number of moving tracks is calculated in an ST3. A focus bias is so set as to maximize the amplitude of a tracking error signal in an ST4. The seek operation is started in an ST5. When the movement is completed by as much as the calculated number of the tracks in an ST6, the seek operation is stopped in an ST7 and the focus bias is so set that the error rate of the signal obtained by reproducing the optical disk is optimized and the step is progressed to an ST8. The present position is checked in the ST8 and when the present position and the target position are equal in an ST9, the seek operation is completed. Since the focus bias is so set as to maximize the amplitude of the tracking error signal during the seek operation, the number of the moved tracks may be correctly discriminated and therefore the prolonging of the seek time may be prevented.
