PURPOSE: An ELC(electro-liquid crystal) integrating an LC(liquid crystal) cell and an EL(electro luminescence) back light is provided to reduce material, minimize light loss and obtain optimum luminance efficiency. CONSTITUTION: An ELC comprises a lower plate(2), a lower electrode(4), an insulating layer(6), a phosphor layer(8), an insulating layer(10), an upper electrode(12) and two side adhesive pole(16') sequentially deposited on the lower plate(2). A lower plate(18'), an ITO(indium tin oxide) layer(20), an insulating layer(24), an LC plate(26), an insulating layer(28), an upper electrode(30), an upper plate(32) and a pole(34) are sequentially deposited on the two side adhesive pole(16'). The lower plate(18') is formed as thinner. Luminescence space of an EL display device and an LC display device are matched to obtain optimum luminance efficiency. The thickness of the lower plate(18') is different from that of the upper plate(32) to improve permeability of light from the EL display device.
