PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve timing adjusting device to suppress generation of striking sounds in association with unlocking originating from the oil pressure biting the air when the engine is at the starting stage. SOLUTION: A lock pin 15 is furnished with a purge valve 24 to relieve the oil pressure biting the air to an exhaust hole 18 at the time of unlocking. When the initial motion pressure of the unlocking oil pressure is impressed on an engaging hole 19, part of the pressure is exhausted to outside from the exhaust hole 18 via the purge valve 24 and a back pressure chamber 16. Accordingly the oil pressure impressed for sliding the lock pin 15 shows a loss, and unlocking can be retarded.
