mRNA of activated lymphocytes such as CD4<+> T cells allows differential diagnosis of allergic diseases. The CD4<+> T cells are isolated and stimulated under defined conditions in vitro. Subsequently, mRNA is subjected to multigene analysis such as DNA arrays. Expression profiling images, such as gene expression profiles, can be created, which allow on the basis of the activated T cell mRNA the prediction of certain phenotypes such as asthma or atopic dermatitis. <IMAGE>
