PURPOSE: An LCD having a substrate used as a phase retardation film is provided to attach a substrate having phase retardation onto the top and bottom faces of a liquid crystal cell to reduce the thickness of an LCD panel and improve contrast of the LCD. CONSTITUTION: A substrate(5) attached to one side of a liquid crystal cell has phase retardation function and an optical axis. A phase retardation film attached onto the top or bottom face of the substrate is omitted. A polarizer(8) is attached onto the top and bottom faces of the substrate. The substrate is one of a glass substrate, a plastic substrate and a film. An additional phase retardation film is attached to the top or bottom face or both faces of the substrate in order to control a phase retardation value. |
