ILLUMINATION DEVICE AND LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY DEVICE USING THE SAME

PURPOSE: To provide an illumination device with high use efficiency or uniformity of light and to provide a liquid crystal display device which uses the above illumination device and can display animated images with good picture quality. CONSTITUTION: In the illumination device having a light source in the side face of a light guide body and having a reflection plate on the back face of the light guide body, an air layer or the like is disposed between the light guide body and the reflection plate. The light guide body has the following structure as a part of the body so as to allow the incident light from the light source into the light guide body to exit from the light exiting face. The structure includes a light scattering controlling layer having directivity in the direction near the normal line of the exiting face, a means to eliminate the light scattering characteristics of the light scattering controlling layer in a specified region so as to satisfy the conditions of total reflection for the incident light from the light source on the interface of the light guide body, and a means to move the above specified region. The illumination device has substantially equal quantity of exiting light in average with time in every light exiting region of the whole light exiting region and has a period when the light exiting region does not substantially emit light. The liquid crystal display device uses the illumination device.
