PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a passive reactor shutdown mechanism used also in a gas-cooled reactor. SOLUTION: A vacancy 2 is provided from a portion, in a backup shutdown rod 1, abutting to a lower end of a reactor core when set in a reactor over an upper side, a falling-down passage 3 is provided in an upper part of the vacancy 2, a bottom plate 5 is journaled rotatably in a lower end of a falling- down passage wall, a bimetal clamp 6 is provided in an opposed face to fix its upper end to the wall 4, the bottom plate 5 is laid horizontally in an lower end of the clamp 6, an air bag 7 is arranged in the vicinity of an opposite side of the bottom plate 5 with the clamp 6 therebetween, a high-pressure side pipe 8 is provided in the air bag 7 to communicate an inside of the air bag 7 with a lower plenum, and a large number of boron balls 9 is filled in an inside and an upper side of the falling-down passage 3 when used.
