PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a toroidal type continuously variable transmission capable of preventing mechanical damage by suppressing heat generation. SOLUTION: In this toroidal type continuously variable transmission in which a rolling element for mediating transmission of torque is held between at least a pair of rotating members and holding force for holding the rolling element in a direction that the rolling element does not extract between the rotating members against load that the rotating members pinch the rolling element is imparted to the rolling element, a detection means (step S1 and 2) for detecting a temperature rise in either one of the temperature of a rolling surface holding the rolling element of the rotating members or the temperature of the rolling element and a rolling element control means (step S3) for reducing the holding force when the temperature rise is detected by the detection means are provided.
