Method for determining the torque generated by an asynchronous electric motor (6) and applied to a drive shaft in which the torque (Mist) is determined from the drive shaft rotational velocity (w) and the voltage or current supplied to the electric motor. The invention also relates to corresponding electric steering for a motor vehicle in which a steering actuator is used to adjust the steering angle, with torque determined according to the above method.
