PURPOSE: A vehicle seat fitted with a hinge mechanism is provided to improve mechanical strength and reduce the weight and the manufacturing cost. CONSTITUTION: A seat has a back(4a) connected to a seat part(2a) via a hinge comprising two cheek plates be secured to each other by toothed slugs controlled by a cam. In order to fold down the seat back forwards, and then return the back into the initial position, the cam of the hinge is associated with an external memory mechanism(9) implemented in the form of a self-contained assembly. The memory mechanism includes a drive member connected to the cam by a mechanical connection including idle motion adapted so that actuation of the cam does not move the drive member, and so that actuation of the drive member causes the cam to be moved towards the unlocked position.
