A detector 2 for smoke, heat, etc. which has test function circuitry capable of initiating verification of the detector's operation, including testing of the communications path between the detector and the central control unit 22. The test commences when a light sensor at the detector responds to light from a laser pointer, the detector having been activated by a signal from the central control unit 22. The result of the test is indicated by light emitting diodes 24,26 on the detector. One of these diodes 26 may also serve as a light detecting transducer. |
