PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing absorbent cotton having high performance and excellent flexibility. SOLUTION: Bulks of cotton fiber are scoured with an acidic aqueous solution which includes an organic phosphonic acid or a salt thereof, and a polycarboxylic acid or a salt thereof, and is adjusted to temperatures of 50-100 deg.C. The pH of the acidic aqueous solution is preferably adjusted to 3-4 with formic acid or the like. As the organic phosphonic acid or the salt thereof, is preferably used 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid or a salt thereof. As a polycarboxylic acid or a salt thereof, is preferably used polymaleic acid or a salt thereof. Impurities can be reasonably removed by this scouring operation in a treatment time of about 10 minutes. The scouring treatment is followed by the breaching treatment with an aqueous solution including hydrogen peroxide and α-hydroxyacrylic acid-base polymer. The objective absorbent cotton of reduced ash content, increased whiteness, and high flexibility can be produced by this process. |
