An apparatus and method facilitate collection of print job status information. The method configures a computer to obtain status information for subsequent print jobs by supplying a proxy printer driver (490) in place of an actual printer driver (475) associated with the printer and may hook a function in the actual printer driver or an interface (460) to the same. The method may also configure the computer to spool RAW datatype to the printer and may store a unique identifier of the computer in the registry (440). The method can also gather status for a print job by executing the proxy printer driver while producing the print job. The apparatus is a computer readable medium on which is embedded a computer program. The program comprises a proxy printer driver translation part (490) which is a proxy for an actual printer driver translation part (475). Optionally, the program comprises one or more of a status configuration utility (445), a status monitor (450), a spooler (430) comprising a port monitor (480), a graphic device interface (460), a registry (440), the actual printer driver translation part (475) and an application (420). |
