PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control drop in engine speed, accompanying the change-over of an automatic transmission from a non-driving range to a driving range. SOLUTION: Variable valve systems 9, 11 for changing the valve opening characteristic of at least one valve of an inlet valve 2 and an exhaust valve 3 and the an automatic transmission 22 are installed. When the automatic transmission 22 is changed over from the non-driving range to the driving range, the valve-opening characteristic of at least either valve of the inlet valve 2 or the exhaust valve 3 is changed, so as to increase engine output torque by the variable valve systems 9, 11. For example, the valve lift amount and the working angle of the inlet valve 2 are increased.
