摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fail-safe processing unit in an internal combustion engine, enabling a driver to recognize the occurrence of failure by reducing output torque, when an electronic control intake device or a variable valve mechanism causes failures in a vehicle accelerating state, and capable of continuing travel in a retreat travel possible state, while avoiding the occurrence of an accelerating and decelerating state which goes against the intention of the driver. SOLUTION: This fail-safe processing unit is provided with a failure mode determining means d for determining whether an intake control state at failure- diagnosing time of an electronic control intake device a by a first failure- diagnosing means c is a state of accelerating a vehicle, and a first fail-safe processing means e for controlling suction air quantity to a cylinder in the reducing direction, by controlling the opening-closing lift quantity of an intake valve in a variable valve lift mechanism b, when the diagnosis by the first failure-diagnosing means c is a failure-detecting state, and a determination in the failure mode determining means d is the vehicle-accelerating state.
